Concentration PV Plants

Solar tracking photovoltaic (PV) technology is suitable for areas with medium to intense sunlight. Solar PV is reliable, with years of proven operation and more than 7 GW installed worldwide. Tracking PV systems are used in many areas because of their distributed energy potential and low maintenance costs. Concentrated PV is based on the same concept as regular PV, but optics are used to concentrate solar energy and reduce the amount of PV cells needed.

  • Modular and distributed PV technology can satisfy any type of electricity requirement, small or large, because the PV capacity easily scales to meet energy requirements. Because they are modular, PV systems can be built for large plants or small, customized installations. Distributed PV can also provide electricity in areas where no grid connection is available.
  • PV power integrates easily with new and existing buildings. Different technologies allow PV to be used on roofs of buildings, or even as part of windows and facades.

The technology

Concentrated PV plants use optic elements to concentrate sunlight onto PV cells. Since concentration greatly reduces the amount of solar cells needed, more expensive semiconductors like GaAs or high efficiency Si are used to maximize performance.

Low concentration PV plants often use mirrors to concentrate solar radiation onto a PV cell. Abengoa Solar often uses high efficiency Si in their low concentration PV installations. High concentration PV plants use lenses to concentrate solar radiation up to 500 times. Since this also leads to fewer PV cells needed, more expensive and higher performance semiconductors like GaAs are often used.

Research and development

Abengoa Solar invests heavily in the R&D of new photovoltaic materials and designs. Abengoa Solar's research groups collaborate with institutions and research centers to improve concentration, thin film and conventional silicon technology. The PV laboratory assesses the performance of different PV technologies.
